\u0130smail Belen, Advisor to YOMSAD and Chair of the Bureau of the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF), attended the \u201cGlobal Summit: Advancing Sustainable Forest-based Bioeconomy Approaches\u201d held in Vienna, the capital of Austria, and delivered the opening speech of the summit.<\/p>\n

Hosted by Austria and bringing together key representatives of the international forestry community, the summit served as a high-level platform addressing sustainable forest management, bioeconomy policies, and global cooperation.<\/p>\n

Austrian Minister of Agriculture, Forestry, Climate and Environment Norbert Totschnig and European Commissioner for Environment, Water Resilience and a Competitive Circular Economy Jessika Roswall also attended the summit. During the event, UNFF Chair \u0130smail Belen held bilateral meetings with both officials and exchanged views on sustainable forestry, forest-based bioeconomy, and international forestry policies.<\/p>\n

The summit, which was also important for T\u00fcrkiye, included the General Directorate of Forestry among its partner institutions, while Director General of Forestry Bekir Karacabey joined the meeting via video conference and shared his assessments.<\/p>\n

\u0130smail Belen: Forests are a strategic foundation of sustainable development<\/strong><\/p>\n

In his opening speech, UNFF Chair \u0130smail Belen stated that the world is currently facing interconnected global challenges such as climate change, drought, biodiversity loss, and food security.<\/p>\n

In his speech, Belen emphasized that sustainably managed forests are not only ecological assets, but also one of the core pillars of resilient economies, social well-being, and sustainable development. He also underlined that forests play a critical role in secure water and food systems.<\/p>\n

Stating that forests are living biological systems, Belen noted that healthy and resilient forest ecosystems can only be achieved through a management approach based on scientific forestry practices and silvicultural methods. He stressed that forests that are poorly or incorrectly managed become more vulnerable to risks such as wildfires, pests, and diseases.<\/p>\n

Belen also stated that sustainable forest-based bioeconomy approaches offer an important opportunity that provides multidimensional benefits for nature, the economy, and society, adding that this approach presents a new development perspective that creates harmony between human activity and nature.<\/p>\n

He also touched on the importance of unity and cooperation in his speech, referring to the phrase \u201cEinigkeit macht stark, unity is strength,\u201d and emphasized that sustainable development can only be achieved through a strong partnership between people and nature.<\/p>\n

\u201cVienna Call for Action\u201d adopted<\/strong><\/p>\n

One of the most important outcomes of the summit was the adoption of the \u201cVienna Call for Action for a Sustainable Forest-based Bioeconomy\u201d<\/strong>, a document aimed at strengthening international cooperation in the field of sustainable forest-based bioeconomy.<\/p>\n

Adopted by the summit participants, this document sets out a common framework in the areas of policy, finance, innovation, and cooperation for the global development and wider implementation of Sustainable Forest-based Bioeconomy Approaches (SFBA) based on sustainable forest management.<\/p>\n

The document places particular emphasis on key priority areas such as integrating sustainable forest-based bioeconomy into policy processes in order to encourage systemic transformation, strengthening an inclusive approach that ensures the participation of all stakeholders, especially forest owners, local communities, women, and youth, mobilizing targeted financial resources and investment mechanisms to support the development of the sector, developing value chains and innovative technologies based on sustainable forest products, and increasing multi-stakeholder cooperation and partnerships at national, regional, and global levels.<\/p>\n

The document represents an important international roadmap for the development of policies and practices that support the transition to nature-positive, resilient, and inclusive economies on the basis of sustainable forest management.<\/p>\n

T\u00fcrkiye\u2013Austria forestry cooperation on the agenda<\/strong><\/p>\n

Following the summit, contacts aimed at international forestry cooperation also gained momentum. In this context, talks were initiated regarding a planned visit to T\u00fcrkiye by a delegation headed by Austrian Director General of Forestry Elfriede Anna Moser between 7\u201310 September 2026<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The planned visit is expected to contribute to the development of cooperation between T\u00fcrkiye and Austria in the fields of forestry, sustainable forest management, and forest-based bioeconomy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
