The fact that the vast majority of forest fires are caused by human activity shows that the problem is not only about climate, but also about the relationship we have built with nature. Brought to life through the collaboration of Boyner, Discovery Expedition, Yuvam Dünya Association, and the powerful storytelling of Warner Bros. Discovery, the “Trees Whisper” project focuses on the hidden communication of trees. Through educational programs for volunteers, children, and local communities, the project aims to strengthen nature literacy. It also seeks to reach wider audiences through a capsule collection, a documentary series, and university training programs.

The effects of the climate crisis are no longer just a threat, they are a reality of today. Rising temperatures, deepening drought, and stronger winds are making forest fires more destructive. The fact that 9 out of 10 forest fires are human-caused clearly reveals that the issue is not only climate-related, but also that we do not know nature well enough and need to rethink the relationship we have with it.

As People Move Away from Nature, Vulnerability Increases

At a time when 56% of the world’s population lives in cities, humanity’s relationship with nature is weakening more and more each day. The increasing number of forest fires in recent years has also affected agricultural lands and settlements living in close contact with forests. For this reason, getting to know nature and developing a social awareness that can read it correctly has become critically important. Today, nature literacy stands out as one of the fundamental elements of building a society that is resilient in the face of the climate crisis.

Forests Are the Lifeline of the Ecosystem

Forests, which regulate the climate, store carbon, and preserve the balance of ecosystems, also form an interconnected system of life thanks to the invisible fungal networks beneath the soil. This silent communication between tree roots and the soil determines the solidarity of the forest and its power to survive together. The sharing of water and nutrients among different species increases the resilience of the ecosystem. When a forest is damaged, it is not only the trees that are harmed, but also this invisible “communication network” of the forest. When this network weakens, the balance of the ecosystem weakens as well.

The Goal: Raising Social Awareness Through Nature Literacy

The “Trees Whisper” project, launched through the collaboration of Boyner, Discovery Expedition, Yuvam Dünya Association, and Warner Bros. Discovery, aims to help transform society into one that lives in harmony with nature and protects it. Brought to life with the support of the General Directorate of Forestry, the project seeks to strengthen the human-nature relationship and raise awareness across all segments of society through educational activities.

From Villages to University Campuses…

The project began in Bigalı village in Çanakkale, one of the most visible and fragile threshold points where the effects of the climate crisis on forests can be observed, with fire awareness training. The training programs will continue in the villages of Kocadere, Behramlı, and Alçıtepe, expanding the project’s impact in the field. Through awareness-raising education, the project aims to turn local communities, university students, and children from different age groups into informed stakeholders, reaching 1,000 people in the field within its first year. In addition, volunteers are being equipped with masks, gloves, helmets, goggles, first aid kits, flashlights, headlamps, knitted caps, and water tankers to enable rapid and correct intervention in the event of possible fires in the region.

The Invisible Language of the Forest Will Reach Wider Audiences Through a Documentary Series

A documentary series will also be produced to help the “Trees Whisper” project, which focuses on the invisible language of the forest, reach wider audiences. The production will be carried out by Warner Bros. Discovery. The project is planned to be broadcast in Türkiye on DMAX and HBO Max, and may later gain international visibility through Discovery. The project will also be brought into daily life through the Discovery Expedition capsule collection.

Kızıldağ: “We want nature’s voice not to be silenced, and we want trees to keep whispering” Orçun Kızıldağ, Deputy General Manager of Product and Category Management at Boyner Büyük Mağazacılık, said the following about the project:

“The climate crisis makes it necessary for us to rethink our relationship with nature and to produce science-based solutions with tangible impact on the ground. The ‘Trees Whisper’ project, which we brought to life through the collaboration of our Discovery Expedition brand, whose DNA is exploration, with Yuvam Dünya Association and Warner Bros. Discovery, is a concrete reflection of this approach. The sustainability of the ecosystem is only possible through the coming together of many factors, and a social consciousness that understands nature and acts in harmony with it is one of the most critical parts of that whole. With the ‘Trees Whisper’ project, we aim to increase nature literacy and make visible the communication between trees, which plays a vital role in the continuity of the ecosystem. Our goal is to bring different segments of society into the process of protecting the ecosystem as informed and active stakeholders, thereby creating a lasting and real change in behavior. We envision a future where nature’s voice is not silenced and trees continue to whisper. With the capsule collection that we will launch in June, we will also make our customers part of the project. We are especially happy that this project, which we carried out with the contributions of Yuvam Dünya Association and the valuable academics on its Scientific Board, will reach much wider audiences through the documentary series produced under the Warner Bros. Discovery signature.”

Kocabıyık: “What we need in the fight against the climate crisis today is exactly this: a collective consciousness that looks after one another, protects one another, and acts together” Kıvılcım Eğilmez Kocabıyık, Founder and Chair of the Board of Yuvam Dünya Association, evaluated the project as follows:

“We are living in a time when the effects of the climate crisis are felt with great intensity. But we need to address this crisis not only as an environmental issue, but as a result of the relationship we have established with nature. At this point, as Yuvam Dünya Association, we draw the strongest inspiration about how to cope with these effects from nature itself. Because nature is not only fragile, it is also an extremely resilient and instructive system. The forest ecosystem at the heart of this project tells us exactly that. Trees, rooted in the soil and communicating with one another through those invisible networks, send signals to each other during drought, fire, water scarcity, and extreme heat, share resources, and try to survive together. What we need today in the fight against the climate crisis is exactly this: a collective consciousness that watches over one another, protects one another, and acts together. With the ‘Trees Whisper’ project, our aim is to make this invisible bond visible and transform nature literacy from a field of awareness into a tool for social transformation. Because we cannot protect nature without understanding it, but once we truly begin to understand it, we can also relearn how to coexist with it. At the same time, this project is especially important because it brings together the knowledge and field experience of civil society, the reach of the fast-moving retail world, and the storytelling capacity of the screen industry. Because the fight against the climate crisis can only create real impact when different disciplines and sectors come together around a shared responsibility.”

Tolunay: “Understanding nature is no longer a choice, it is a necessity” Prof. Dr. Doğanay Tolunay, Member of the Scientific Board of Yuvam Dünya Association and faculty member in the Department of Soil Science and Ecology at Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Forestry, evaluated the project as follows:

“What makes a forest a system is all the living beings in it, the non-living elements such as air, water, and soil, and the ecological processes between them. One of these ecological processes is the complex network of life operating simultaneously above and below the ground. Through their roots, trees do not only exchange water and nutrients, they also warn one another against environmental stresses and develop collective responses. As the effects of the climate crisis intensify, this delicate balance becomes more fragile. Prolonged drought periods, sudden heat waves, and changing rainfall patterns are beginning to strain these internal solidarity mechanisms of forests. But the critical threshold here is not only climate conditions, it is also how human intervention intensifies the pressure on this system. Fragmented habitats, improper land use, and unconscious human activities weaken the forest’s ability to heal itself. What is truly needed is an approach that reduces risks before they emerge, preserves the integrity of the ecosystem, and gives nature room to function on its own terms. Without an approach based on scientific data, shaped by local conditions, and supported by social awareness, it is not possible to protect this fragile balance. Protecting forests means protecting not only an ecosystem, but the living conditions that ecosystem provides, in other words, protecting our own future. That is why understanding nature is no longer a choice, it is a necessity.”

Toksoy Balcı: “While we operate within a global Social Impact framework, we believe the most meaningful impact takes root locally” Beste Toksoy Balcı, Marketing Director of Warner Bros. Discovery Türkiye, explained WBD’s Corporate Social Responsibility vision as follows:

“At Warner Bros. Discovery, we believe in the power of storytelling to make the invisible visible. We are happy to further develop the partnership we launched with Boyner and Discovery Expedition in the field of social responsibility. We are proud to be part of the ‘Trees Whisper’ project by bringing the hidden language of forests to life through a documentary series that will reach audiences across Türkiye via our DMAX and Discovery channels and our HBO Max platform. As a global media company, our role is to help important stories travel further and resonate more deeply. Through documentary storytelling, we can amplify scientific insights and civil society efforts, helping people not only understand the natural world, but also rethink their relationship with it. While we operate within a global Social Impact framework, we believe the most meaningful impact takes root locally. We believe these initiatives are important tools that reflect our commitment to informing, inspiring curiosity, creating deeper awareness about the world around us, and using our media as a force for good.”

As the world warms rapidly, the climate crisis is increasingly threatening the future of forest ecosystems.
