Woodura® – A stronger and smarter wood flooring

The Wood Powder Technology by Välinge is a highly versatile method to create a multitude of different surfaces and products. One example is Woodura which enables beautiful wood flooring with high impact resistance and improved wear resistance.

The Woodura technology utilizes a wood based powder fused in to a wood veneer. The powder perfectly fills up the natural openings of the wood and enhances the wood appearance, eliminates the need for putty operations and creates a significantly stronger surface. A Woodura layer has a Brinell hardness of 10 HB (measured according to EN1534:2000), which is about three times greater than the hardness of a traditional solid oak layer.

The powder mixture is a dry mix of wood powder (preferably recycled from existing sanding or milling operations), binder, pigments and other additives such as hard particles.

The powder mix is scattered on a core panel, typically HDF, and a wood veneer of preferred quality (rustic, smooth etc.) is placed on top of the powder. The board is pressed in a conventional short-cycle press. As the veneer is compacted at 40 bar pressure, at temperatures in the range of 160-180°C, it is partly impregnated with melamine formaldehyde resin. The combination of material, high temperature and pressure creates a product with a reinforced wood surface with increased impact resistance.

One technology, multiple products

The Woodura product provides a freedom to create a wide range of designs by combining different veneer qualities and powder mixes in different colors. After pressing, the Woodura products are treated with conventional wood flooring surface treatments adding further design possibilities. Välinge’s in-house production capacity of Woodura enables a wide range of services for licensees; from pilot capacity to start-up training, product range development and customer support.
