One of Türkiye’s rising export sectors, the furniture industry—which posted a trade surplus of USD 3.7 billion in 2024—has set its sights on the Chinese market.
Following the high tariffs imposed by the United States on China, Chinese furniture giants are receptive to production partnerships in Türkiye. Aegean exporters are heading to Shanghai and Foshan to seize this opportunity.
To explore cooperation opportunities with China—which alone accounts for 40% of global furniture production and 32% of exports—observe economies of scale on site, and increase Türkiye’s exports to China, which reach USD 10 million annually, Aegean furniture exporters will stage visits to Shanghai and Foshan.
Standing out in recent years with large-scale sectoral trade delegations akin to fairs, the Aegean Furniture, Paper and Forestry Products Exporters’ Association will organize a “China URGE Sectoral Trade Delegation” within the scope of its Aegean Furniture UR-GE Project, with 17 companies participating.
“First Overseas Step to China”
Ali Fuat Gürle, Chairman of the Aegean Furniture, Paper and Forestry Products Exporters’ Association, said they aim to cluster furniture exporters in the Aegean and strengthen the brand value of Turkish furniture.
Gürle said, “Within the scope of the Aegean Furniture UR-GE Project, we are undertaking our first overseas marketing activity to China. Global furniture exports have reached USD 525 billion, and China’s furniture exports alone stand at USD 190 billion. China alone accounts for 44% of global furniture production and 36% of exports. Due to the high tariffs imposed by the U.S. on China, we anticipate that Chinese manufacturers will be open to production partnerships in Türkiye. We will explore this ground.”
Furniture China Fair and Foshan Visit
During the trip to China, the delegation will tour Furniture China, one of the world’s largest furniture fairs. They will then conduct on-site inspections and company visits in Foshan, one of China’s key furniture manufacturing hubs.
Hikmet Güngör, Vice Chairman of the Aegean Furniture, Paper and Forestry Products Exporters’ Association, said, “This delegation will be eye-opening for Turkish furniture exporters. We will both get to know the Chinese market and evaluate production partnerships. Through the B2B meetings we will hold in China, we will also look to lay the groundwork for increasing Türkiye’s furniture exports to China.”
